Stem cell therapy: evidence, regulation and where it is offered
Stem cell therapy uses cells that can develop into other cell types, taken from the patient or a donor and given by injection or drip. Our evidence label for it is Unproven. No good evidence of benefit for healthy ageing; regulators have issued warnings or advise against routine use. 91 clinics we list offer it, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico.
Unapproved products on the market include cells taken from a person's own fat and products made from umbilical cord blood, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
What the evidence says
Prescription status: not marked prescription-only in our data.
Some stem cell treatments are established. Blood stem cell transplants are an approved treatment for some blood and immune disorders and some blood cancers. In Europe, one approved treatment uses stem cells from the eye to restore sight after an injury to the cornea (ISSCR, 2024).
In December 2024 the FDA approved its first mesenchymal stromal cell therapy. It is for children aged 2 months and over with steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease, a serious immune complication that can follow a transplant.
Outside such uses, the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) says most stem cell "treatments" on offer are unproven and can cause harm. None of the approved uses is for ageing.
Regulators and prescription status
United States. The FDA warns about the broad marketing of unapproved regenerative medicine products, including stem cells. It says these products need FDA approval before they can be marketed to consumers.
European Union. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) advises the public against unregulated cell-based therapies. Cells that are substantially changed, or used for a different job in the patient than in the donor, are medicines that need authorisation.
The regulator table on this page shows the rules we have recorded for each country.
Unproven means: No good evidence of benefit for healthy ageing; regulators have issued warnings or advise against routine use.

Safety and questions to ask
The EMA lists serious side effects reported after unregulated cell therapies: infections, unwanted immune reactions, tumours, loss of sight and bleeding in the brain. The FDA has reports of blindness, tumours and infections. The ISSCR's warning signs include claims based on patient stories, one treatment for many diseases, claims that there is no risk, and claims that approval is not needed.
- Is this an approved treatment for my condition, or part of a registered clinical trial?
- Which regulator approved it, and for what use?
- Where do the cells come from, and how are they prepared and tested?
- What are the short- and long-term risks, and who gives emergency care if something goes wrong?
- What does the price include, and is any of it refundable?
