Multi-cancer blood test: what it costs and what the evidence says
Published prices for a multi-cancer blood test run from US$900 to US$1,450 in the United States (2 prices), from £1,100 to £1,200 in the United Kingdom (3 prices) and from S$650 to S$5,250 in Singapore (8 prices). Our evidence label for it is Emerging. Early human evidence; benefits for healthy ageing not yet shown.
A multi-cancer early detection blood test looks for signs in the blood, such as tiny pieces of DNA, that may come from a cancer. If it finds a "cancer signal", some tests also suggest where in the body the cancer may be. It is a screening test, not a diagnosis. A positive result needs scans, and often a biopsy, to find out if there really is cancer. The figures below are for the one test the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewed in 2026; other tests may perform differently.
What it misses. In the two large studies in the FDA's 2026 review, the test found about 1 in 3 of the cancers diagnosed within a year. It found between about 1 in 7 and 1 in 5 cancers at stage 1, the earliest stage, and it missed most breast and prostate cancers. A negative result does not mean you do not have cancer.
False alarms. Between about 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 positive results were not cancer when checked within a year. In one of the studies, nearly half of the people whose result was a false alarm still had at least one invasive procedure, such as a biopsy. Waiting for answers can also cause worry.
What the evidence says
No trial has yet shown that these tests help people live longer. The largest trial so far, the NHS-Galleri trial in England, included more than 140,000 people aged 50 to 77. Everyone gave a blood sample three times, a year apart. Half had their samples tested; the other half had theirs stored and had usual screening only. The trial did not meet its main goal: the number of cancers found at stage 3 or 4, the later stages, was not lower in the tested group. There were somewhat fewer stage 4 cancers, but the researchers have not yet looked at deaths and plan longer follow-up (UCL, June 2026; The ASCO Post, October 2026).
When we checked on 18 Oct 2026, no multi-cancer blood test had been approved by the FDA. In September 2026 an FDA expert panel reviewed one test for adults aged 50 and over, to be used alongside standard screening and not instead of it. The panel voted 7 to 2 that its benefits outweigh its risks. The vote is advice; the FDA makes the decision, which had not been announced. The American Cancer Society says there are no US clinical guidelines for these tests and that they do not replace current screening. The National Cancer Institute says breast, cervical, bowel and lung cancer screening are recommended whether or not someone has one of these tests.
Emerging means: Early human evidence; benefits for healthy ageing not yet shown.

Questions to ask before you book
- What happens if the test finds a signal, and who arranges and pays for the follow-up tests?
- Which cancers does the test look for, and how often does it miss them, including early-stage cancers?
- Should I still have the screening tests my own doctor recommends?
- Is the test approved by a regulator where I live?
- Will a doctor explain the result to me?
