Whole-body MRI: what it costs and what the evidence says
Published prices for a whole-body MRI run from US$1,200 to US$5,999 in the United States (12 prices), from £1,995 to £2,995 in the United Kingdom (5 prices) and S$4,200 in Singapore (1 price). Our evidence label for it is Unproven. No good evidence of benefit for healthy ageing; regulators have issued warnings or advise against routine use. Screening people without symptoms is not recommended by the American College of Radiology; findings can lead to further tests.
A whole-body MRI scan takes pictures of most of the body in one visit. MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves, not X-rays. Clinics offer it to people without symptoms as a way to look for cancer and other problems early. Methods differ between clinics, including which parts of the body are scanned.
What it finds and misses. Most people who have the scan have at least one finding. A 2020 review of 12 studies of people without symptoms found that about 95 in 100 had an abnormal finding and about 30 in 100 needed more tests. About 1 in 100 had a cancer confirmed. Many findings turn out to be harmless, but they can lead to more scans, biopsies and worry. A normal scan does not rule out disease. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists notes that many serious conditions do not show up on a scan, and that false reassurance can cause harm.
Safety. MRI does not use ionising radiation. The magnet pulls on metal, so any implant, such as a pacemaker, must be confirmed as safe for MRI before the scan. The scanner is loud, so ear protection is needed. Some scans use a contrast dye called gadolinium, which can cause side effects such as allergic reactions (FDA).
What the evidence says
Two radiology bodies have said they do not recommend this scan for people without symptoms. In 2023 the American College of Radiology said there is not enough evidence to recommend it. It said there is no evidence that it helps people live longer or saves money, and that it finds many unclear results that lead to more tests and cost. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists does not recommend it for people without symptoms who have not had cancer and do not have an inherited cancer syndrome.
The scan does have a guideline use for a small group at very high inherited risk. European guidelines recommend a whole-body MRI every year for adults with Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare inherited condition that greatly raises the risk of many cancers. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a warning about whole-body screening, but it is about CT scans, which use X-rays, not MRI. That page says the FDA knows of no evidence that whole-body CT scans of people without symptoms do more good than harm.
Unproven means: No good evidence of benefit for healthy ageing; regulators have issued warnings or advise against routine use.

Questions to ask before you book
- Who reads the scan, and are they a radiologist registered in this country?
- Which parts of the body does the scan cover, and which does it not?
- What happens if the scan finds something, and who arranges and pays for the follow-up tests?
- Is a contrast dye used, and has my implant or device been checked as safe for MRI?
- Will a doctor explain the results, and will my own doctor receive the full report?
