Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: evidence, regulation and where it is offered

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy means breathing pure oxygen in a chamber at higher than normal air pressure. Our evidence label for it is Depends on use. Established for some medical conditions, unproven as a longevity treatment. 81 clinics we list offer it, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Mexico.

Some wellness studios sell "mild" hyperbaric sessions, so it is worth asking what pressure a chamber reaches. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) says that, for treatment, the pressure must be at least 1.4 atmospheres (1.4 times normal air pressure at sea level) while the person breathes close to 100% oxygen.

What the evidence says

Prescription status: not marked prescription-only in our data.

Hyperbaric oxygen is an accepted hospital treatment for some conditions. In its 2019 handbook, the UHMS recognised 14 uses where evidence supports it. They include decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, some wounds that will not heal, and late damage from radiotherapy.

For healthy ageing, the evidence is thin. A 2020 study gave 60 daily sessions to 35 healthy adults aged 64 and over. It reported changes in markers in their blood cells, such as telomere length. It had no comparison group, and changes in blood markers do not show better health.

Regulators and prescription status

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared hyperbaric chambers for several conditions. In July 2021 it warned that some centres promote them for uses it has not cleared or approved, such as cancer, Lyme disease, autism and Alzheimer's disease. It advised people to check with their health care provider first and, if treatment is recommended, to use a facility accredited by the UHMS.

Depends on use means: Established for some medical conditions, unproven as a longevity treatment.

Safety and questions to ask

Johns Hopkins Medicine lists possible complications: damage to the middle ear, sinuses or lungs; changes in eyesight that usually pass within weeks; low blood sugar; and seizures from too much oxygen. Pure oxygen under pressure also burns easily. In January 2025 a five-year-old boy died in a chamber fire at a clinic in Michigan, in the United States.

  1. What pressure does the chamber reach, and is it cleared as a medical device for that use?
  2. Is the centre accredited by the UHMS or a similar body, and who supervises each session?
  3. Have I been checked for conditions that make pressure changes unsafe, such as ear or lung problems?
  4. How many sessions does the clinic propose, and why?
  5. Can I fly after a session, and what happens if I feel unwell in the chamber?
